Value chocolate bars

Continuing to develop the value end of the UK confectionery market as the economy remains tough, Hancocks Cash and Carry has launched a six strong range of 100g chocolate bars with a recommended retail price of just 59p.

Exclusive to Hancocks, the Baron range of 100g chocolate bars serves a very straight forward need – a broad range of chocolate, packed attractively at an affordable price. Shoppers continue to want sweet treats but as the big brands increase their prices, more and more are seeking a value alternative when budgets remain very tight.

The Baron range of 100g chocolate bars includes:

White

Milk

Dark

Black and White (layers of white and dark chocolate)

Dark Choc Mint

Dark Choc Orange

“This is a very attractive range of chocolate bars that will sell itself based on appearance and remarkable value. Black and White is an unusual addition to the range and sits alongside some extremely popular flavours. Many retailers will be able to achieve volume sales selling at 2 for £1, whilst still achieving a decent margin. At a time when branded confectionery is squeezing retailer margins hard, it is essential for smaller retailers to consider opportunities such as these” says Jonathan Summerley, Hancocks purchasing director.

The Baron range of chocolate bars is available in all 18 Hancocks Cash and Carries now.

Meet Hibbi and his children's chocolate

A loveable Hippo called Hibbi has launched his own range of novel children’s chocolate bars exclusively at Hancocks Cash and Carry. Always busy cycling, skateboarding and running, Hibbi the Hippo fronts the novel range of chocolate, which includes popping candy and banana flavours, in a market that is crying out for more innovation.

“The children’s sugar confectionery market is very busy, however chocolate seems to have missed out on innovation and novelty. At Hancocks, we are seeking to address this for our customers, offering them a lively and exclusive range of bars under the Hibbi brand that can provide strong margins and great value for shoppers” says Jonathan Summerley, Hancocks purchasing director.

The Hibbi children’s chocolate bar range includes:

4 pack bars (39p rrp)

Four individually wrapped fingers of chocolate packed in a colourful box. Four flavours are available:

Banana flavour

Strawberry flavour

Popping Candy (contains pieces of popping candy within the chocolate!)

Cream flavour

8 pack bars (75p rrp)

Larger versions of the above for Strawberry and Cream flavours.

These pack bars are ideal for portion controlled treats, each being individually wrapped.

100g bars (59p rrp)

One variety is made from white chocolate and contains chocolate beans within the chocolate. The second variety is a milk chocolate bar with a white chocolate marbled design in it.

Aerated chocolate bars (59p rrp)

These are available in both white and milk chocolate varieties – a popular choice for children.

“The presentation of this range will certainly make a great impact in store, gaining much interest for a great value range. The pricing allows for 2 for £1 and 3 for £1 deals which can work extremely well for independent retailers within the impulsive confectionery market” adds Summerley.

Hibbi chocolate is available in all 18 cash and carries across the UK now.

New sugar free jar range

As the market for sugar free confectionery continues to gather strength, Hancocks Cash and Carry has launched a seven strong range of sugar free sweet jars under its Kingsway brand.

“Sugar free is definitely a growing trend in the market place. As conditions such as diabetes become more prevalent and as obesity continues to be a hot topic, I think that sugar free sweets will have a place to play in confectionery.

Initial sales of sugar free at Hancocks have been greater than we expected. Many independent retailers will find that sugar free can become an opportunity to them. Talking to local shoppers will help to establish the level of interest in addition to simply trying a few lines” says Jonathan Summerley, Hancocks purchasing director.

The range, which also holds NAFNAC status, is available in 2kg jars. High margins can be achieved from selling sweets in this way and sugar free sweets are certainly no exception.

The sweet varieties are:

            Throat and Chest

            Sherbet Lemon

            Fruit Chews

            Mint Humbugs

            Blackcurrant and Liquorice

            Chocolate Eclairs

            Assorted Toffee

Available from all 18 Hancocks cash and carries and to purchase online now.

Fill jars for profit

Hancocks Cash and Carry has launched a five strong range of EMPTY sweet jars, giving retailers even greater flexibility when selling loose sweets. Retailers can fill them with their own bespoke range to sell as gifts or treats, achieving margins in excess of 40%.

“We stock many hundreds of varieties of loose sweets and yet we sell only a small proportion in jars to retail. Selling empty jars allows smaller retailers to make a real difference to their range and their profits. Filled jars make an excellent gift or a treat for the family” says Jonathan Summerley, Hancocks purchasing director.

The empty sweet jar range comprises all shapes and sizes that could enhance display or provide gifting ideas. The smallest jar, a Victorian style sweet jar, could retail at £2.49 when filled and achieve a margin of 46%.

“The opportunities are endless when retailers put in some time and creative thought to fill jars in a bespoke manner. Whilst they are advised to offer something different to the supermarkets, creatively filling jars will be a profitable answer for many” says Summerley.

Robinsons branded sweets launch in jars

Hot on the heels of the Wimbledon Tennis Championship, Hancocks exclusively launches a range of three Robinsons branded fruit sweets which should prove to be the perfect match for independent retailers this summer.

Available in 2.72kg jars, the individually wrapped sweets, containing natural flavours, natural colours and juices from concentrates, are available in three flavours:

            Robinsons Barley Fruits

            Robinsons Classic Fruits

            Robinsons Apple & Blackcurrant

Robinsons continues to be an iconic British brand loved by all ages. Worth £196m at retail value, the brand has 47% household penetration and receives a high level of media support which will really help initial trial of these new sweets.

“We are really excited about this exclusive launch and Robinsons sweets should be a great addition to our existing range of sweet jars. Pick and mix sweets continue to be a strong growth area within confectionery and retailers now understand the high margins that this sector can command.

Sugar confectionery comes into its own during the summer months and as Robinsons has such a strong association with Wimbledon, this is the perfect time to launch Robinsons sweets which we expect to become a firm favourite very quickly indeed” says Jonathan Summerley, Hancocks purchasing director.

As the first signs of warmer weather appear, Hancocks unveils its ever popular lollipop range for the 2011 summer season, offering independent retailers an extra profit opportunity.

“Lollipops are forever a favourite with children and there are many purchasing occasions during the summer months, perhaps as a treat or as a pocket money purchase.
Value chocolate countlines with huge margins

Whilst independent retailers come to terms with the higher cost of branded countlines and ever tighter margins for their business, Hancocks Cash and Carry has launched a twelve strong range of value countlines with remarkably low retail prices and refreshingly high margins.

As demand for better value chocolate increases, the specialist confectionery cash and carry has exclusively sourced a range of countlines with extremely familiar flavours.

“Whilst some shoppers will remain loyal to a particular brand whatever the price, others are seeking a much better value taste – retailers need to be able to offer chocolate to suit all levels and our new range of countlines will effectively serve the value end of the market.

Whilst widening the choice and interest for their customers, our value countlines can also give retailers margins in excess of 40% which is currently unheard of in this category of confectionery. A strong display of these different chocolate products would provide a strong point of difference for retailers.

The quality of these chocolates is very good indeed. We keep the pricing low by not investing heavily in marketing. Proactive retailers will be able to introduce these great value products to their customers, and once they are assured of the taste, they will come back for much more” says Jonathan Summerley, Hancocks purchasing director.

The range includes:

Maxbar 30p rrp 45% margin

Nuttymax 40p rrp 40% margin

Ozmo Egg 59p rrp 53% margin

Biscolata Break Cream 20p rrp 48% margin

Papita Caramel 25p rrp 40% margin

Hancocks has launched this value range of countlines following on from the success of its recently launched value range of 100g and 150g filled chocolate bars, retailing at 59p and £1 respectively.

“There is a genuine need for retailers to offer a number of levels within the chocolate market. Whilst some shoppers will stick with what they know whatever the price and others will always stick to the most premium level, many others want to satisfy their chocolate craving in the best value way that they can find. And with the economy as it is, this desire for value is higher than ever at the moment, providing independent retailers with a great opportunity to develop a real point of difference” says Summerley.
