In 1638 the Benedictine monks of Moret-sur-Loing, France created this sweet by boiling down refined cane sugar with barley water, cream of tartar, and water. A classic wrapped sweet, handcrafted by Royale and supplied in a Victorian-style jar, whose flavour has survived the centuries and continues to please.
