Warheads: The Power of Sour

Warheads

It’s widely known that America doesn’t do things by halves. From parades and sports events to their candy – they go above and beyond. Especially when it comes to not only sour, but super sour sweets! Warheads are an American favourite and may be the most sour candy on the market! But why exactly did the brand blow up?

The answer is simple – they are incredibly sour! So sour, in fact, that they were immediately popular with schoolchildren. There was such excitement that there were informal competitions in the playground. Given how sour the sweets are, the rules of the challenge were simple – whoever could keep a Warhead candy in their mouth for the longest won. Years later, this spirit still lives on, with YouTubers seeing how many they can eat consecutively, as well as the schoolyard classic.

Their name is inspired by the idea that eating one is like an explosion in your mouth. When you first put a Warhead candy in your mouth it certainly feels that way! Your face will probably be screwed up just like that of their mascot Wally Warhead. But, after a few moments that passes and you’re left with a much sweeter – and much less sour – fruity flavour. Granted, the explosive sourness isn’t for everyone, but fans of sour sweets will love them!

How do the sweet treats pack such an explosive punch? Well, there’s a science to it! The classic hard candy is flavoured using acids found in citrus fruits. These give them the lasting sweet and sour flavour. For the supremely sour coating, the boffins at Warheads use malic acid, which again comes from fruit. It’s the acid in apples that gives them a sour taste, in fact. So, despite the extreme sourness, the flavours are from organic acids! Whilst they are safe, they may not be comfortable for everyone. The packaging does contain a warning, and for those with delicate tongues it isn’t advisable. But for those searching for the most sour candy, it is perfect.

Warheads were invented in 1975, and despite being made in America, they actually originated in Taiwan. But in 1993, an American company took them stateside and then launched them into the global spotlight. Since then, their reputation has soared and the range has expanded significantly from the original Extreme Sour Hard Candies. You’ll find all different kinds of sweets, with everything from sour worms to sour spray candy and lollipops.

Fans of chewy sweets will have plenty choice, with different shapes and sizes all with that signature sour explosion! There are Lil’ Worms and Sour Chewy Cubes to sink your teeth into. Both of these are fruity gummies with a super sour coating, whilst the Sour Ooze Chewz are a little different. Their chewy outer layer has a super sour layer, whilst in the middle there is a runny ‘ooze’ filling. With a sour shell and sweet fruity insides, their Sour Jelly Beans are an explosive take on a confectionery classic.

But, as they’ve always pushed boundaries, Warheads also have several lines that’re really out there. The Twist & Shake Eggo and Thumb Dippers are both fruity lollies that you coat in a sour powder. These are ideal for those who don’t like their sweets too sour, as you have more control over the flavour. Particularly popular with a younger crowd, the Super Sour Candy Spray and the Squeeze Me Gel offer a face-scrunching liquid candy option.

The Warheads range includes something that will appeal to fans of both sour sweets and American candy alike. Their broad range has an option for everyone and is sure to fly off the shelves.
